Reciprocal Heading
Reciprocal Heading
July 23, 2016 02:42AM
I have been using Polar Navy well for several years, but only recently have I had a heading source connected to my NMEA 2000 network. I am using the Raymarine EV sensor core. On Polar Navy the heading is always showing up as essentially reciprocal too its actual heading. My Raymarine chartplotter and Maretron DSM 150 instrument display all have the correct heading. I am using an Actisense NGT-1 USB gateway to feed Polar Navy.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Could you please capture a few screens of NMEA sentences as shown in the NMEA Terminal in PolarView, save them into a text file (copy and paste) and attach the file here.

Hi thanks for getting back to me. The two images attached are screen caps - one from my Raymarine Chartplotter today and the other from Polar Navy. You'll notice the roughly reciprocal headings. I was at the dock all day so little changed. Again my Maretron DSM was showing the same heading. I will paste the date from the NMEA terminal below.

Thanks again, for your help.

The heading source (or the N2K device it is attached to) is producing heading sentences that include correct (magnetic) heading along with a deviation value of approx. 187 degrees. PolarView applies this deviation value, as designed, resulting in reciprocal heading. I suspect that other software ignores N2K supplied deviation, hence the correct non-reciprocal heading.

Deviation is usually produced due to compass being "swung"/calibrated. You may want to check with the manufacturer of the heading sensor to see how to properly set up compass deviation or calibrate it. Once deviation value is corrected, PolarView will show appropriate heading.

I am having the same issue. I just installed a new B&G Triton2 instrument package with a B&G ZG100 Zeus GPS Antenna. My B&G instruments are showing the correct heading and a deviation of 15 degrees which is correct for my location. The Polar View software is showing a heading exactly 180 degrees from the true heading. Also how can I get a screen shop of the NEMA sentences to send to you if needed. I do not have Internet connection on my boat.

You can see incoming NMEA data by opening Ship -> NMEA Console window in PolarView.

If you'd like to attach it, please copy and paste it as a text (not a screen capture image).

I am still having issues with a reciprocal heading utilizing a B&G Triton2 system and a B&G ZG100 Zeus GPS unit. My B&G display shows a heading of 40 degrees and Polar View shows a heading of 241 degrees while at the dock. the COG on Polar Navy reads 40 degrees as well. I have reviewed the settings on the B&G system and the compass is using a deviation of +14 degrees which is correct for the location. I have calibrated the B&G compass. I am attaching a file of the NEMA input to Polar Navy and mt laptop. Any ideas on a solution would be helpful. thanks. ML

You are correct - there is an issue in PolarView handling N2K data where deviation is set to "data not available".

Fix will be included in the next product update.
